I adore the Apple Orchard.
Our annual trip to Small’s Fruit Farm in Mondamin, Iowa is one of my favorite traditions that Kyle and I started 4 years ago. There are only a small handful of things that we do just the two of us each year and this is one of them. My parents discovered this place a few years ago and it’s just a short, 35 minute drive from Omaha. Set in the picturesque Loess Hills, Small’s actually feels like you’re hundreds of miles removed from anywhere. Rows and rows of everything from Jonagolds to Red Delicious, it’s literally like wandering around a kid’s playground for me. I could seriously go up and down every aisle but since they have like 100 aisles that are about .25 miles long, that’d never happen. 😉
Baking is not my thing.
I absolutely love to cook and give recipes my own spin, but when it comes to baking…no. The thought of using a bunch of bowls, ingredients and making a huge mess {how I envision baking HA!} is not my thing. Plus we don’t have a ton of open counter space. But twice a year, I put on my floral apron and call myself The Pioneer Woman. Something about the basket full of apples puts me in a zone and the day after our orchard trip, I crank out mason jars of cinnamon apple sauce, dumplings, crisp, pies and turnovers. The house smells heavenly and I go through about 12 cups of sugar. Calories don’t count in the Fall, mmmmmk?!
Perfect excuse for simple Fall fashion.
When you head to the Apple Orchard, boots are a must. No matter how dry it might seem, the grass and dirt are uneven and messy and there are so. many. bugs. This year I threw my matte Hunters on with my favorite destructed denim and a simple striped long sleeve to protect my arms from bug bites to look the part. And adding a wine-colored floppy hat was kind of requirement as well. This is the quintessential Fall uniform in my mind and the perfect look to be comfortable and cute while climbing trees and picking out the best apples!

Hey hey, loved this post! I plan on taking the kids apple picking tomorrow and I was wondering if I should wear sneakers or boots but it seems boots are the way to go, right?
